I only read it at the end/beginning of 03/04 I had the flu and then an ear infection so that's how I spent my time in bed.
What were your first thoughts?
I was a little confused by all the language that Tolkien used. But the language in itself is beautiful and great to just read aloud.

Very beautiful. I found the Character I could relate most to in Tolkien (woo! Rock on Nienna!) and really rich plot. No other book compares.

I found the first sixty or so pages tough to get through when I first read the Silmarillion but now I've started it again and I find the same pages rich and full. I enjoyed the Silmarillion and found reading it gave me a much better understanding of why something's are the way they are in the other books. The fading of the elves, which many can't understand, has its base in the Silmarillion as do Saruman, Gandalf and Sauron.
The follow up book The Unfinished Tales is also a must read and if your not sure what it's about it's the stories of several of the main characters of the Silmarillion expanded. I enjoyed it also and will read it again along with the other books also and I would like to make rereading the books an annual event if I don't spend all my time RPGing LotR.
Both the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales are books that you would do well to read several times if you a Tolkien fan, and you would find more that you had not seen before each time you reread them.
